Lake Michigan College’s Bertrand Crossing Campus offers new classes

Lake Michigan College’s Bertrand Crossing Campus is offering several community education classes this fall.
The following is a sampling of classes offered.

• The Life and Legacy of Scouting’s Camp Madron: 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 5 at 109.
For more than 50 years Camp Madron served as the heart and soul of scouting in southwest Michigan.
Join local scout historian Jim Ellis as he traces the history of Madron from its founding in 1926 through its sale in 1984.  No cost.

• Party appetizers and hors d’oevres: 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 5 at Orchard Hills Country Club, 2841 Niles-Buchanan Rd., Buchanan.
Join Chef Tim Carrigan as he demonstrates how to prepare simple appetizers. As executive chef at the Café at Fernwood Botanical Gardens and at Orchard Hills Country Club, he has plenty of tricks to delight the palate. Food will be served. Cost is $20.

• 150th Anniversary: Civil War: 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 12 at 109.
Attend this free presentation to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, the defining event of 19th century America. Topics include causes of the war, slavery, presidential leadership, the experiences of Union and Confederate soldiers and the legacy of the bloodiest and deadliest conflict on American soil.

• African Violets: 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 12 in Room 106a.
If caring for an ailing plant is bogging down your enthusiasm, learn more about this African native from horticulturist Stacey Rocklin. No cost.
She is with Michigan State University›s Ag Tech program and has been a commercial African violet grower.
Attendees will learn why African violets stop blooming and get spotty leaves. No cost.
