LMC to present ‘Spamalot’

BENTON TOWNSHIP — The wait is over.  The national tour of the Tony Award-winning Best Musical of 2005, “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” is making its way to the Lake Michigan College Mendel Center Mainstage on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
One doesn’t have to be a Monty Python fan to enjoy this unique mix of the legendary tale of King Arthur with outrageous comedy featuring a chorus line of dancing divas and knights, farting Frenchmen, killer rabbits and one legless knight.
This musical adaptation of the 1975 motion picture “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” rips off the silly and simply funny humor made famous by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin.
Thirty-six years later, “Monty Python’s Spamalot” keeps current with today’s pop culture while maintaining the same gags from the movie. In the musical, Camelot is now a glitzy Vegas lounge where the headline singer, Lady of the Lake, worries about being replaced by Britney Spears while the Laker Girls, dressed as cheerleaders with pom-poms, dance.  “Spamalot” takes pot shots at just about everything, from Broadway musicals, Andrew Lloyd Webber and more as Arthur searches for the Holy Grail and falls in love.
As in the movie, King Arthur’s knights include the dull-witted Sir Lancelot, the stinky Sir Bedevere and the beautiful Sir Dennis Galahad. Sir Robin is still accompanied, and annoyed, by his minstrels.
“Spamalot” even pokes fun at itself by having the audience perform the finale with the cast. The audience is asked to join in looking at “The Brighter Side of Life,” singing, clapping and dancing.
“Monty Python’s Spamalot” won three Tony Awards in 2005, including “Best Musical” and “Best Director” for Mike Nichols, as well as the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards for “Best Musical.” The original cast recording of “Monty Python’s Spamalot” won the 2006 Grammy Award for “Best Musical Show Album.”
