BLOOMINGDALE — Van Buren Youth Camp hosts its 50th annual “all-you-can eat” 50th wild game and harvest dinner on Saturday, Oct. 15.
Each year, VBYC Board of Trustees puts on a fundraising dinner the second Saturday of October.
Individuals donate wild game, fish, fruits and vegetables the board uses to create a wide variety of menu items.
As part of the 50-year dinner, area restaurant chefs are donating wild game recipes the board will prepare and serve. The menu always includes wild game, fish, ham, turkey and all the fixings, including salads, soups and desserts. Come hungry to enjoy the food and know you are helping children attend with a “Campership” next summer. If you have deer, other wild game or fish, vegetables or fruits to donate, contact Georgie/Tim Washburn at (269) 624-6552 or Sue/Paul Knudstrup at (269) 624-1542 before Oct. 10. A special part of the dinner each year is homemade bread. The bread is part of the menu and, for an added special treat, small loaves are sold at the door. There are a limited number of loaves for sale, so if you hope to purchase one you may want to arrive early. Dinner begins at 5 p.m. Serving ends at 7. Cost is $12 adults, $10 seniors 65+, $5 children grades 1-6 and free for kindergarten and younger. All proceeds go to Camperships for youth needing assistance to have a fun-filled camping experience next summer at VBYC, a non-profit organization that gives more than 700 children ages 6-18 a fun and meaningful camping experience each year.
They attract campers from all parts of the United States and even other continents; many are third- and even fourth- generation campers.
Van Buren Youth Camp is located just outside Bloomingdale. The camp is located north of M-43 taking County Road 655 to 12370 45th St.
