Old and ‘tired’ no more

Out with the old and in with the new.
Zolman Tires demolished the building at its 1901 South 11th St., Niles location in the beginning of March. The six-month project allotted 30 days for the demolition and 30 days for site work before beginning construction for the new and improved building.
“Everyone is working well and hard,” said owner Nate Zolman during the process. “In construction you will always run into complications, but it is amazing how willing people are to help.”
During the reconstruction, Zolman Tires set up shop at a temporary location in order to stay open to the public. The secondary building was located just a few blocks north, on the west side of 11th Street.
“The temporary facility provides all our normal services,” Zolman said. “We’re very lucky to have such a facility to accommodate to our industry. We’re able to retain 90 percent of our normal revenue. It’s really a blessing.”
The newly constructed building, which opened Aug. 29, is more modern and efficient, with newer technology.
“The first building was old and dilapidated,” Zolman said. “It wasn’t a facility we wanted or that customers deserved.”
Zolman predicts hiring two to four more employees for the new facility.
“I have confidence in the community,” Zolman said. “With this reconstruction we’re saying ‘We’re here to stay.’ We want to be around for the next 30 years.”
Zolman Tires had previously been a silent partner with Martin Tires, but bought Ron Martin out in 2000 and changed the name.
Throughout the six months of the project, Zolman was traveling back and forth between the Niles and Mishawaka locations. He credits his effective time and location management to his long-term managers at both locations, who help to reduce the burden.
“Zolman Tires is an appreciative family business,” Zolman said. “We’ve been greatly supported by the Niles and the surrounding communities, as well as our employees and customers.”
