EDWARDSBURG — In what could very easily have been a preview of the Lakeland Conference tournament championship game, the visiting Bees of Bridgman edged the Edwardsburg Eddies 1-0 Tuesday afternoon.

Edwardsburg played most of the game on the offensive end of the field, but they could not get a shot beyond Jackson Kamp, the Bridgman goalkeeper.

The Eddies’ best opportunity in the first half came when Nick Karmalegos got by a defender deep in the zone and chipped the ball by Kamp. Unfortunately for Edwardsburg the ball rolled right across the front of the goal and it didn’t have anyone there to help the ball find the back of the net.

Both teams continued to attack as they battled to a scoreless intermission.

The second half found the Eddies in control for the most part until just over 13 minutes into the half when Kyle Rotundo was able to center a ball from deep in the corner that carried right over the hands of Edwardsburg keeper Ryan Mahaney and found teammate Matt Hendricks, who finished the goal giving the Bees the 1-0 lead.

“Their guy got to the outside and made a dangerous cross in and the cross turned into a shot and went to the far post,” said Edwardsburg coach Ryan Rosenkranz. “That’s a pretty tough shot to defend as a keeper, back pedaling like that and that ball goes in the back corner.”

Edwardsburg continued to attack and get shots on goal, but not many of them were true quality shots until with 19 minutes left to play Josh Clark blasted a shot that Kamp was fortunate to even get a hand on. Kamp managed to get just enough of the shot to deflect it to the crossbar, and the crossbar sent it back into play where it was eventually covered by Kamp.

With eight minutes remaining Andrew Gnott lofted a nice ball into the box but Kamp was able to grab it before an Eddie could get a piece of it.

Edwardsburg’s last chance came with just 31 seconds remaining as Karmalegos once again had a chance from point blank range but was unable to get the ball into the net as Kamp made yet another save.

“Their keeper (Kamp) is a very good keeper, and they’re defensively sound in the back and it was pretty hard to penetrate at times,” said Rosenkranz. “Their defense is really strong, and the keeper made some great saves.”

The Eddies fall to 1-6 on the season and 0-1 in the conference, while Bridgman improves to 2-2, 2-0 in the conference.
