THREE RIVERS — The Wolverine Conference opened up its season Monday morning at Sauganash Golf Club.
Plainwell took the first jamboree as it easily outdistanced the field with a 186. The Trojans were led by medalist Hannah Lewis with a two-over par 37.
Vicksburg finished second with a 201 and Allegan third with a 209. Paw Paw and Otsego rounded out the top five with scores of 210 and 223 respectively.
South Haven was sixth at 226, Dowagiac seventh at 240, Comstock eighth at 240 and Three Rivers ninth at 253.
Dowagiac earned the seventh place spot over Comstock due to the fact that the Colts have just four golfers. Ties are broken with fifth-person scoring.
Hayley Smith finished a stoke out of the top 10 for the Chieftains as she shot 51. Maggie Cripe shot 56, Rikki Baker 68 and Alexis Kocsis 90.
“I saw improvement,” Dowagiac coach Van Johnson said. “Across the board we were down strokes, which is some reason for encouragement. All we had to do is find out how to make up those other 20 strokes to close up on those other teams. Hayley and Maggie are both ready to make the next level and shoot in the 40s.”
Dowagiac will host the Wolverine Conference Wednesday at Indian Lake Hills Golf Course. Play is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.
