Dopp, Watts wins doubles crown

Edwardsburg’s Alex Watts and Anthony Dopp defeated Hope and Mark Daniel Sunday afternoon to win the 37th Annual Dowagiac City Tennis Tournament mixed doubles championship.

Watts, who was a winner on Saturday in women’s doubles (see related story above) and Dopp advanced to the finals with straight set victories in the opening two rounds. Watts and Dopp knocked off Alyssa and Michael Robbins in the opening round 6-2 and 6-2 before defeating defending champions Sue Watson and Scott Marshall in the semifinals 6-2 and 6-2.

Team Daniel reached the finals with a 6-0 and 6-3 win over Meg Hein and Ron Hein in the first round. In the semifinals, they needed three sets to defeat Shelly Urbanski and Mike Urbanski 6-2, 6-7 and 6-2. They won the tiebreaker in the second set 7-3.

Team Urbanski advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2 and 6-1 win over Amy Gearhart and Ed Gearhart.
