The names of the two motorcyclists injured in a crash on South 11th Street in Niles have been released.
Niles Police Capt. Jim Millin identified the operator of the motorcycle as Niles resident Kelly Gillam, 47. His wife, Annette, 43, was a passenger on the cycle. They are both being treated at Memorial Hospital in South Bend with serious but non-life threatening injuries, Millin said.
According to Millin, the motorcycle was traveling north on South 11th Street around 7 p.m. Saturday when a Dodge Charger traveling east on Cherry Street collided with it. The driver of the car was Niles resident Dujwan Berry, 35, and he was not injured.
The Gillams were both wearing helmets at the time of the accident, and alcohol was not believed to be a factor.
Millin said no tickets were issued but the matter is still under investigation and has been turned over to the prosecutor’s office to determine if charges will be filed.
Berrien County ranked 13th out of 83 counties in the state for number of persons killed or seriously injured in motorcycle crashes with 90 between 2006 and 2010, according to a report by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning.
Millin said motorists should always be watchful for motorcycles and bikes on the road.
“When you talk to the driver in an accident like this, usually you hear ‘I didn’t see it,'” he said. “I don’t think motorists are watching as closely as they should be for motorcyclists or even bicyclists.”
