Niles baseball splits with Lakeshore

STEVENSVILLE — Taylor Campbell’s single in the top of the eighth inning Tuesday night helped Niles earn a split of its Big 16 Conference West Division doubleheader with Lakeshore.

The Vikings won the nightcap 8-6 as Campbell singled home Mitchell Dehn with the go-ahead run and Chris Mangus lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Matthew McLaughlin with an insurance run.

Niles dropped the opening game to the Lancers 4-2.

Neither team score a run through the first four innings of the second game.

The Vikings scored four in the top of the fifth only to have the Lancers score three times in the bottom half of the frame.

The Dallas Munger and McLaughlin stroked back-to-back run-scoring singles in the fifth inning. Logan Harpenau started the rally with a lead-off double.

After Niles had taken a 5-3 lead in the top of the sixth, the Lancers scored three times in the bottom to go ahead 6-5. The Vikings tied the score with a passed ball in the top of the seventh.

Niles outhit Lakeshore 7-6 in the second game with Campbell and Harpenau both finishing with a pair of hits.

Riley Robson went the distance for the Vikings, scattering six hits, while striking out four.

In the opener, both teams scored a run in the first before Niles took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by Campbell.

The Lancers would tie the score at 2-2 with a run in the fourth and then won the game with a pair of runs in the fifth.

The Vikings again outhit the Lancers, this time 7-5. McLaughlin was 4-for-4 with a double.

STEVENSVILLE — After holding top-ranked Lakeshore to just three runs in the opening game, visiting Niles was unable to stop the Lancers in the nightcap.

The Vikings lost 3-0 in the opener and 10-0 in five innings in the second game as they fall to 5-14 on the season and 0-6 in Big 16 Conference West Division play.

Niles sophomore Molly VanDeKeere allowed just four hits against Lakeshore in the first game and struck out two.

Lakeshore’s Megan Hiler was just as impressive, allowing four hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks.

Sophie Nielsen had a pair of hits for Niles, while Amelia Ernsberger and Oliva Jordan had the two other singles for the Vikings.

Lakeshore scored 10 runs on 10 hits and took advantage of three Niles miscues in the second game.

Jordan had the lone hit for the Vikings, a double.

VanDeKeere took the loss, although only three of the runs were earned.

Maggie Hildebrand tossed the one-hitter for the Lancers with five strikeouts.
