ELKHART — Sometimes a girl just wants to feel pretty.
That was Jane Stewart’s goal when she nominated her longtime friend, Carol Crowel, also of Edwardsburg, for a makeover.
But is wasn’t because Stewart believes her friend needs to improve upon her looks; it’s because she is recovering from breast cancer.
Stewart nominated Crowel for a complete Hello Gorgeous makeover, which included chocolate; fresh flowers; a facial; pedicure; manicure; makeup; hairstyle with products to take home; choice of outfit; and surprise makeover “reveal” with 10 friends at McCarthy’s on the Riverwalk in Elkhart.
“I’m loving every minute of it,” Crowel said as she received her pedicure Tuesday.
Stewart, who heard of the program through a friend, just learned recently Crowel was selected.
Founded in South Bend, Hello Gorgeous is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that provides free, professional makeovers and cosmetic education to women battling all cancers. Its goal is to certify two salons in each city in the United States in order to help 500,000 women per year.
Crowel, 60, got quite a surprise when Stewart told her they were going mushroom hunting Tuesday. She convinced her they needed to stop at Fix Salon in Elkhart to pick up a beauty product.
Little did she know, a florist carrying a bouquet of flowers as well as the staff of Fix — each wearing a Hello Gorgeous T-shirt — would be greeting her at the door.
“She’s very well-deserving of it,” Stewart said. “It’s really a remarkable program.
“She might be a little bummed she’s not getting mushrooms,” she added with a laugh.
The makeover was also a celebration — Crowel finished radiation treatments about three weeks ago, and her body is still healing.
“I was really glad to get that over with,” Crowel said.
Julene Melendez, owner of Fix Salon, said her business was chosen by Hello Gorgeous to be an affiliate — the only one so far in Elkhart. Reputable salons are selected and must hold fundraisers to offer the mandated monthly makeovers. Crowel’s was the second makeover at Fix.
