Buchanan passes preliminary budget

BUCHANAN — The Buchanan City Commission unanimously approved a tentative budget Monday, but potential state funding cuts could mean significant changes are coming.
City Manager Bill Marx recommended what was essentially “a duplicate” of last year’s budget with “a couple small changes.”
The $4.5 million budget calls for $1.1 million to be spent on public safety, $366,570 on general government expenses (city commission, manager, clerk and treasurer pay) and more than $600,000 on streets.
Gov. Rick Snyder’s proposed budget would eliminate statutory revenue-sharing, which could slash revenues for the city by around $250,000.
“We’re kind of in limbo waiting for the state,” Marx told commissioners Monday. “This will probably all change because of a cut in revenue sharing.”
Buchanan must adopt a final budget by June 30.
The commission also approved its priorities for 2011, which include attracting businesses to Third and River streets, renovating the senior center on Oak Street, upgrading the Tin Shop Theater, continuing the McCoy’s Creek trail and watershed projects and seeking opportunities to consolidate services.
The commission held a goal setting meeting last Saturday when they determined the priorities for the year. A list of all the priorities for the commission will be on the city website, www.cityofbuchanan.com.
