Cheri Hallwood, an award-winning children’s author from Niles, will have one of her stories hit the stage next month.
A children’s theater project script writing contest through Miller College in Battle Creek allowed students the chance to adapt each of Hallwood’s three books into plays.
“One Wish for Winifred Witch” has been adapted for stage by Joellen Maurer of Harper Creek High School and is being directed by Eric Parker of The Barn Theatre. “The Curious Polka Dot Present” was adapted for stage by Kate Belew of Marshall High School and is being directed by Penelope Alex Ragotzy of The Barn Theatre. Lastly, “Winter’s First Snowflake” was adapted for stage by Christa Moody, Kyle Smith and Alexys Vandermel, all students at Harper Creek, and is being directed by The Barn Theatre’s Dusty Reeds.
The plays will be performed on Tuesday, May 10 in the Harper Creek High School Auditorium, 12677 Beadle Lake Rd., in Battle Creek. Theater doors will open at 5:30 p.m.; curtain time is at 7 p.m. Advanced ticket sales are going on now. Adult tickets are $5, student tickets are $3, and children ages 5 and under are free. All proceeds will benefit the 2011-2012 Miller College Children’s Literature and Theater Project.
A book signing with Hallwood and her illustrator, Patricia Rose, also a Niles resident, will take place prior to the plays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Harper Creek High School.
Hallwood and Rose were also among the community judges in the Miller College and Kellogg Community College Children’s Literature Project competition, which had 1,200 students in 43 classrooms submit books they had written.
Hallwood’s first book, “Winter’s First Snowflake,” gained critical acclaim and won the 2007 Mom’s Choice Award for Most Outstanding Children’s Book. Her next two books, “The Curious Polka-Dot Present” and “One Wish for Winifred Witch,” both won Mom’s Choice Awards as well.
