Big Ten Network to televise eight championship games

CHICAGO — The Big Ten Network is the home for complete coverage of spring championships in May, televising Big Ten events in the sports of baseball, men’s and women’s golf, rowing, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field.

Each of these events will be produced in high definition.

Broadcast coverage begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, with the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Tournament from the University of Michigan. The Big Ten Men’s Tennis Tournament, hosted by Wisconsin, is at 6 p.m. The Ohio State men’s and Northwestern women’s teams look to defend their Big Ten crowns from a year ago. The Buckeyes captured their fifth-straight tournament championship, while the Wildcats improved their title count to a conference-best 12 consecutive to earn the Big Ten’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

The Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships will air at noon on Saturday, May 14. Northwestern University will host this year’s event from Lake Shore Country Club. Purdue seeks its fourth-straight team crown and fifth-consecutive individual title after outlasting the field by 27 strokes in 2010 on the strength of Laura Gonzalez-Escallon’s tournament record 280 score.

At noon Sunday, May 22, the Big Ten Network will televise the Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships hosted by Purdue University at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. Illinois will look to defend its titles from 2009 and 2010, while Northwestern senior David Lipsky aims to repeat as individual champion.

At 1 p.m., the network will provide coverage of the Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships from the University of Iowa. The Minnesota men’s team seek its first ever three-peat, while the Penn State women’s team is vying for its fourth-straight title.

At noon on Saturday, May 28, the Big Ten Network will televise the Big Ten Rowing Championships from Eagle Creek in Indianapolis. The Badgers hope to defend their Big Ten crown after claiming their first conference title in 2010.

For the third straight year, the Big Ten Network will televise every game of the Big Ten Baseball Tournament live.  The tournament will take place May 25-28, with a game on May 29 if necessary, at Huntington Park, home of the Triple-A Columbus Clippers. Coverage begins with two opening-round games at Noon and approximately 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25. Minnesota won both the conference regular-season and tournament titles last year, earning the Big Ten’s automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball Championship.

In the latest polls, the Big Ten has nationally ranked teams in the sports of men’s golf (No. 13 Illinois and No. 14 Iowa), women’s golf (No. 4 Purdue and No. 19 Michigan State), men’s tennis (No. 4 Ohio State, No. 18 Illinois, No. 23 Minnesota and No. 24 Indiana), women’s tennis (No. 10 Michigan and No. 17 Northwestern), men’s track and field (No. 15 Minnesota), and rowing (No. 8 Michigan State, No. 9 Wisconsin, No. 10 Ohio State and No. 14 Michigan).
