Camp Tannadoonah packs more fun

VANDALIA — Camp Tannadoonah at Birch Lake has announced its summer program for 2011.

Activities which previously cost extra are now included in a $425 all-inclusive weekly fee, according to the camp’s director, Amber Grundy, Ph.D.

Camp Tannadoonah serves boys and girls ages 5 to 16 years.

“Campers can fill up to three periods per day with their favorite activities at no extra charge, including sailing, tennis, diving, volleyball, digital photography, science, art, soccer and more,” notes Grundy.

Each program will run one to two hours each day, and will be led by experienced coaches and teachers.

New programs added to the 2011 summer schedule include yoga, guitar lessons and water skiing (which is the only activity for which an extra $75 fee is charged).

The summer schedule begins the week of June 19 and ends the first week of August.

Day camping is also available for campers starting at 5 years old.

The day camp price is $275 per week.

Other regular activities at the camp include swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, sports, archery, nature, crafts, drama  and team-building activities.

Each camping session has a different theme, such as Harry Potter Week, Game Show Mania Week and Survivor Week.

Camp Tannadoonah also conducts Counselor in Training (CIT) programs for teens with a strong interest in camping, according to Dr. Grundy.

Newcomers interested in learning about being camp counselors can sign up for the CIT 1 two-week program to be held July 17-30.

Applicants must be entering ninth grade, and the cost is $550.

Those who have participated in prior CIT programs at Tannadoonah are eligible to attend the more advanced CIT-2 program, scheduled July 10-23, at a cost of $500.

This is Dr. Grundy’s sixth year as director at Tannadoonah.

She has been involved with Tannadoonah since 1985 as a camper, counselor, waterfront director and board member.

She holds a doctorate in developmental psychology with a focus on middle childhood and early adolescence from the University of Notre Dame.

She teaches developmental psychology as an adjunct instructor at St. Mary’s College during the school year.

Camp Tannadoonah is owned and operated by Camp Fire USA River Bend Council, Mishawaka, Ind.

It is licensed by the State of Michigan and accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA).
