CASSOPOLIS — An 18-year-old White Pigeon woman was sentenced in Cass County Circuit Court Friday to jail after slicing another teen’s face with a box cutter.
Caitlynn Baldwin, 68434 Bellows Road, pleaded guilty Jan. 12 to felonious assault with a dangerous weapon.
Baldwin was arrested after she and 18-year-old Joline Fortuna exchanged text messages and Facebook messages Oct. 17 and 18 threatening “to kick each other’s ass,” Judge Michael Dodge said.
The defendant arrived Oct. 18 at Fortuna’s residence on Elkhart Road in Edwardsburg, where the victim and her boyfriend were at home.
There was an altercation, and Fortuna threw a punch.
Baldwin then cut Fortuna’s face with a box cutter, which she alleges she possessed because of her job, not to fight the victim.
“You can’t do this kind of thing in civilized society,” Prosecutor Victor Fitz said. “You’ve can’t bring a knife to a fist fight.”
The victim, who was not present in court, claims she sustained two scars on her face that will never go away.
“I am sorry for the situation,” said Baldwin, who has no prior criminal record.
Dodge sentenced Baldwin to 90 days in jail with credit for two days served, and one year of probation.
