Cassopolis wins Centreville Invitational

CENTREVILLE — It took a little extra work, but the Cassopolis boys’ basketball team picked up the championship of the Centreville Holiday Tournament on Dec. 30.

The Rangers (5-2) outscored Mendon 11-4 in overtime for the 66-59 victory.

Cassopolis had to rally from a 26-18 halftime deficit to take the title. The Rangers led 12-11 after one, but were down by eight after being outscored 15-6 in the second quarter.

The Rangers narrowed the gap to seven points, 39-32, by the end of the third quarter and then outscored the Hornets 23-16 in the final eight minutes to force overtime.

Jacob Lee led a balanced Cass offense with a game-high 19 points. Oliver Fiala added 11, Nate Hartline 10 and Dwayne Morgan 9.

Bangor Holiday Tournament

BANGOR – The Cassopolis girls’ basketball team came up just short in the title game of the Bangor Holiday Tournament against Parchment.

The Rangers (5-3) rallied in the second half, but fell to the Panthers 40-35.

Cassopolis trailed Parchment 10-4 after one quarter and 21-13 at the intermission. The Panthers were able to open up a 33-19 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.

The Rangers outscored Parchment 16-7 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t catch the Panthers.

Reese Ellison led Cassopolis and all scorers with 16 points. Tammy Lee added 10.

Jocelyn Jameson paced the Panthers with 12 points.
