Buchanan to permit Sunday liquor sales

BUCHANAN — Another municipality has joined the majority of the area in permitting liquor sales Sunday mornings.

The Buchanan City Commission voted unanimously Tuesday night to lift the ban on liquor sales from 7 a.m. to noon Sundays. A state law was passed in November granting municipalities the right to permit sales or maintain the Sunday morning ban.

According to Buchanan City Manager/Police Chief Bill Marx, the city was granted an extension request to make its decision after the Dec. 15 deadline.

Marx said he has received no calls regarding the new law.

“The feelings are mixed about what to do with this issue,” he said. “I think what a lot of the stores along the state line are banking on is Indiana’s current prohibition on morning sales.”

The cities of Dowagiac, New Buffalo and Sturgis have chosen to maintain their Sunday morning liquor sales bans. Niles and Niles Township did not take action, meaning the stores are permitted to sell Sunday mornings.

Municipalities can reverse their decisions if desired in April, Marx said.

“I’m neutral on this,” Commissioner Joe Scanlon said.

“I’m not real thrilled about it…” Mayor Carla Cole said, explaining that she hopes police do not have issues with citizens drinking and driving on Sunday mornings.

Permits to sell liquor Sunday mornings are $160.
