Sulfide copper mining threatens UP wilderness area

To the editor:

A beautiful wilderness area in the Upper Peninsula is threatened by the copper mining company, Kennecott.

The Yellow Dog watershed drains approximately 98 square miles of wilderness and is home to brook, brown and rainbow trout. It is beautiful natural area with many waterfalls.

Kennecott’s sulfide mining operation in this area threatens the animal and plant populations as well as the public’s right to enjoy this rich wilderness.

However, the biggest concern is that a “problem” in the drilling operation could result in the pollution of Lake Superior that might rival the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

I urge everyone to become aware of this situation and work to preserve our irreplaceable wilderness.
