SOUTH BEND, Ind. — It came right down to the end Thursday afternoon at Leeper Park, but the Berrien Springs tennis team captured the undisputed Lakeland Conference championships.
Thanks to Buchanan, which finished third during the year, regular season champion Bridgman was denied a share of the conference title.
The Bees were 4-0-1 during the regular season, while Berrien Springs was 3-0-2. Buchanan finished third with a mark of 3-1-1.
On Thursday at the conference tournament, the Shamrocks rolled up 30 points to edge Bridgman and Buchanan, which were knotted at 36. Edwardsburg finished fourth with 29 points, Brandywine fifth with 19 points and Coloma sixth with eight.
The final standings have Berrien Springs as the outright champion, Bridgman second and Buchanan third. Edwardsburg, Brandywine and Coloma hold down the same places as they did in the regular season.
The Shamrocks were led to the title by flight champions Nate Pagel (No. 3 singles), Amir Benjelloun (No. 4 singles) and the No. 4 doubles team of Stuart Gillette and Carl Steinhauser.
The Bucks had a pair of champions as Derek Blank defeated Berrien Springs’ Jonathan Shembarger at No. 2 singles 5-7, 6-4 and 6-3.
Shembarger entered Thursday’s league tournament with an unblemished record in Lakeland Conference play.
The Bucks’ No. 1 doubles team of Ryan Henckel and Jake Welsh defeated Bridgman’s Josiah Badger and Joseph Koehler 6-4 and 6-4.
