Big second half lifts Dowagiac past Comstock 47-2

COMSTOCK — A big second half helped the Dowagiac football team snap a two-game losing streak Friday night.
The Chieftains scored 37 second half points to defeat host Comstock 47-2 in a Wolverine Conference clash.
Dowagiac (3-2) grabbed a 10-2 halftime lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by Troy Butcher and a 23-yard field goal by Brett Scanlon.
Comstock’s points came on a first quarter safety.
The Chieftains regrouped at halftime and came out and scored 20 points in the third quarter to turn the game into a rout against the winless Colts.
Anthony Nelson and Austin Adams did most of the damage for the Chieftains as they combined for four touchdowns in the final 24 minutes of play.
Nelson opened the second half scoring with a 30-yard run, while Adams added a 43-yard run to make it a 24-2 contest.
Nelson’s second touchdown run of the third quarter came from three yards out and extended the lead to 30-2.
Adams opened the fourth quarter scoring with a 10-yard run, while Cody Carnell scored from 28 yards out before Scanlon’s second field goal of the night, this one from 37 yards, capped the scoring.
Scanlon, who twice this season has kicked two field goals in a single game, tied the mark of Andy Kruger.
His five field goals are one shy of Troy Silvernale’s season mark of six set in 1981.
Scanlon is a perfect 5-for-5 on the season.
Dowagiac finished with 243 yards on the ground, led by Adams, who had 122 yards .
Defensively, the Chieftains held Comstock to a mere 45 yards in total offense. Nelson led the defensive effort with eight tackles.
