For one magical evening, the resident dining room at Lakeland Specialty Hospital, Berrien Center was transformed into Hollywood for the facility’s first senior prom.
More than 50 residents, along with their family members, walked a red carpet and posed for the “paparazzi” in front of an arch decorated with flowers. Residents were dressed for the occasion, complete with corsages, top hats and feather boas.
In keeping with the prom’s theme, the dining hall was adorned with sparkling decorations, a huge Hollywood sign and life-size images of movie legends. Fancy hors d’oeuvres and sparkling wine and juice added to the ambience. Residents, family members and Lakeland team members danced to live music provided by Allen Mott, of Dowagiac.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the prom kings and queens.
Residents Leo Casey, Wilburn Goosey and Eugene Morris were crowned kings at the event, while Mary Jo Deutscher, Frances Laughlin and Lois Stevens were named prom queens.
The senior prom was presented by the hospital’s staff members, who plan special events for residents and their families throughout the year, including the Senior Olympics and day trips to local attractions.
“The feedback from residents and their families about the prom was fantastic,” said Deb Lundin, manager of activity therapy at Lakeland Specialty Hospital, Berrien Center. “We’re thrilled that we could give our residents such a memorable experience.”
