Editorial: WNDU TV anchor’s actions not acceptable

Members of the media may not be elected officials, but they are still in the public eye. Their actions are subject to news stories, just as they report on other people’s wrongdoings.

A recent incident was no exception as WNDU anchor Erin Logan, 31, was arrested Thursday morning at a Mishawaka residence home to Christopher Zorich, a Notre Dame employee and alum and former NFL football player. The station confirmed it immediately fired her after the incident, when she allegedly became disorderly after police were called to Zorich’s home to a report of a heated argument. She threatened one officer’s job and lifted her three-inch heels toward and swatted at an officer, according to media reports. A test revealed she had a 0.11 blood alcohol level, and was released from jail by mid-morning Thursday.

According to Logan’s bio on the WNDU Web site, the anchor joined the TV station in 2007. It states that “talking, listening and building relationships with people … that pretty much sums up Erin Logan’s ideal job and she’s proud to say she got what she wanted.”

It’s unfortunate for Logan, because the dream job she wanted has apparently fizzled in a matter of minutes.

As of this morning, an article written by South Bend Tribune reporter Dave Stephens was already part of WNDU’s Wikipedia entry.

People make mistakes, but this kind of behavior is deplorable. WNDU did the right thing by not only reporting on her arrest, but letting her go. Her behavior could reflect  upon the TV station and is not a good example of how a TV personality – seen and heard by thousands of people, including children – should behave.

All media – no matter the form, market or job title – should be held accountable for their actions, whether they are on or off the clock.
