Approximately 230 young scientists will use their creative and critical thinking skills as they expire scientifically-based activities sponsored by Lewis Cass Intermediate School District on Monday, March 1
The young scientists will be third, fourth and fifth grade students from Dowagiac, Cassopolis and Edwardsburg schools.
Teachers have planned and designed the day of experiments for their students with the assistance of Brian Wood, LCISD instructional services director.
The planners used a modified national Science Olympiad model to structure the day.
There will be upwards of a dozen different science activities in which students can participate.
Activities generally are designed as hands-on team events.
Students are scheduled into life science, earth science and physical/chemical science sessions.
Alternating with lunch activities, students and adults will have an opportunity to participate in a special presentation by David Mastie, Son of Mr. Wizard.
LCISD receives assistance for the day’s program.
Working this year with Wood are John Bradke, Felomina Patton and Billie Snow of Cassopolis Public Schools, Shannon Hatch of Dowagiac Union Schools and Lynelle Clark, Dawn Alabaugh, Deb Williams and Cindy Vernon of Edwardsburg Public Schools.
Tom Caskey from The Museum at Southwestern Michigan College will also be a presenter.
This is the 17th year an elementary Science Olympiad has been conducted for Cass County elementary students.
The goal is to allow students the opportunity to explore “hands-on” science learning and to reward students for their interest and ability in science.
The event takes place at Southwestern Michigan College’s Dowagiac campus.
