Near drowning at pier

ST. JOSEPH – On Monday, June 22, at 3:19 p.m. a report was received from Berrien County Dispatch of a possible drowning off the South Pier on Lake Michigan.
St. Joseph Police Officer Chris Sysko responded to the scene.
On arrival, the person, an 18-year-old male, was out of the water and breathing.
According to witnesses, the person was jumping off the pier and having difficulty swimming while in the water.
The person was assisted out of the water by friends and people on the pier.
He told his friends and people on the pier that he could swim.
He was transported to Lakeland Medical Center by Medic I. No details on his medical condition were available.
