CASSOPOLIS – Gladys Alma (Steele) Weatherspoon, 87, of Vandalia, died on Monday, April 27, 2009, in the home of her son Vincent (Dolletta) in Jackson after an extended illness.
She was born July 5, 1921, in Pokagon, the daughter of the late Fred Jenkins and Lula Mae (Bryant) Steele.
Gladys married the late Lee M. Weatherspoon on June 14, 1942, in Calvin Township.
She is survived by: one brother, David (Joyce) Steele of Dowagiac; one sister, Ruth (James) Crawley of Dowagiac; one sister-in-law, Gladys (Weatherspoon) Bigham of South Bend, Ind.; nine children, Donald B. (Christine Halliday) Weatherspoon of Haslett, Anthony K. (Lola) Weatherspoon of Lansing, Andrea K. (James) McAdams of Lanham, Md., Gregory D. (Vivian) Weatherspoon of Vandalia, Brenda F. Presbury of Upper Marlboro, Md., Denise A. (Donald Sr.) Payne of Blacklick, Ohio, Vincent J. (Dolletta) Weatherspoon of Jackson, Arna O. (Arthur) Livingston of Greenbelt, Md., and Dave D. (Lorraine) Weatherspoon of Williamston; 30 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.
Gladys was a retired co-broker with Weatherspoon Realty Inc. in Cassopolis.
She was a member of the Vandalia Church of God; and a former member of: NAACP, St. Mary's Chapter 10 Order of the Eastern Star, Calvin 4-H Club senior leader, Cassopolis Chamber of Commerce, Cass County United Way, Cass County Historical Society, Helping One Student to Succeed program for Cassopolis Public Schools and in the first graduating Cass County Senior Citizens Police Academy class.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ross Beatty Senior High School, 22721 Diamond Cove Road, Cassopolis.
Officiating will be her pastor, the Rev. John H. Anderson Jr.
Interment will be in Chain Lake Cemetery, Cassopolis.
Her family will receive friends on Friday, May 1, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 2, from noon to 1 p.m. at Ross Beatty Senior High School.
