BERRIEN SPRINGS – Officer Ryan Venno of the Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Police Department responded to a 911 call at 6:49 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, that a person had been shot at 12022 N. Red Bed Trail and was being taken to the hospital by private vehicle.
Berrien County dispatch advised the caller to stop with the victim at the Medic One Ambulance station on M-139, just north of Linco, which they did. The victim was then transported to Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph by Medic One Ambulance.
Jon Wetzel, 23, informed Venno he was going to clean his firearm and thought he unloaded it, but when he pulled the trigger he shot himself in the right foot.
Venno recovered the firearm at the house on Red Bud Trail and found it fully loaded with one fired shell casing in the cylinder.
