For the third year in a row, Niles Main Street has been the recipient of national accreditation as a Main Street community.
Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) informed members of the Niles DDA Main Street in a letter Friday.
"This ongoing commitment is essential for the long term success of the downtown revitalization effort," wrote Laura Krizov, manager with the Michigan Main Street Center of MSHDA in a letter to Niles DDA Main Street Chairman Dennis Mack. "The organization has support from both the public and private sectors."
The National Trusts Main Street Center established 10 aspects of criteria for recognition as a nationally-accredited Main Street community.
That criteria includes:
Broad-based community support.
Vision and mission statements.
Comprehensive Main Street work plans with measurable adjectives.
Historic preservation ethic.
Active board and committees.
Adequate operating budget.
Professional management and development.
Program of on-going training for staff and volunteers.
Reporting of key statistics.
National Main Street Network Membership.
"The board, staff and volunteers of Niles Main Street continue to make great strides in the preservation, promotion and development of the historic city center," added Krizov, "and should be commended for their efforts."
