Stephen A. Salay, 84, of Edwardsburg, died on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at his home, after an illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at noon, in Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, U.S.-12, Edwardsburg, with Father Joseph McCormick, pastor, officiating.
Friends called at the church one hour before Mass.
Burial followed in Adamsville Cemetery, with the United States Navy Honor Guard holding a Flag Presation and Taps.
He was born on Aug. 7, 1924, in South Bend, Ind., the son of Nicholas Szalay and Mary Fodroczi. He was the last living child of 11 children.
He was a cost accountant, having worked for Studebaker and Curtis Wright in South Bend, Ind. and at C.G. Conn of Elkhart, Ind.
He worked to Warsaw, Ind, where he worked for Korth and Bertsch Vending. He moved to Edwardsburg, 22 years ago.
On Oct. 9, 1954, in South Bend, Ind., in St. Patrick's Church, he married Joan M. Sullivan, she survives.
Additional surviving family include their children, Jennifer Marie (Monty) Bolinger of Noblesville, Ind., Laura Lynn (Harry) Zappala and Ami Frances (Daniel) McBride, both of West Lafayette, Ind. and Stephen Douglas (Michelle) Salay of Mishawaka, Ind. He also has 10 loving grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was a devout husband and loving father and grandfather. He loved Notre Dame and couldn't believe when they lost to Syracuse.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a Yeoman 2/c. He served in the Pacific during the war.
