CASSOPOLIS – Michigan State University Extension will be hosting a program for homeowners, master gardeners, municipal tree managers, local consultants, forest land owners and anyone else interested in the health of southwestern Michigan's trees on Monday, Nov. 3, in the MSUE conference room of the 1899 Cass County Building in Cassopolis from 1 to 3 p.m.
Dr. Deb McCullough, forestry entomologist from MSU, will be talking about: "Gypsy Moth – Why the Rebound in Michigan Now and What to Expect"; "Emerald Ash Borer – Battle for Containment Lost, Anything We Can Do?"; an overview of key occasional tree pests that can cause problems in outbreak years; and new invasive species – anything new expected to move into Michigan?
Also joining the meeting will be Dr. Dennis Fulbright, forestry pathologist from MSU. His segment will be concerned with yard tree planting recommendations considering the new pest complex in southwest Michigan. There will be a brief overview of where to find MSU resources, links to MSU on-line tree resources and the Landscape CAT Alert with Bruce MacKellar, Extension educator from St. Joseph County and Dan Rajzer, Cass County Extension director.
If you are concerned about a problem you have been seeing in the trees in your yard or neighborhood – oak wilt, needle drop, decline in spruces and pines and dogwood anthracnose, this program is designed especially for you. While there is no cost to attend this informative meeting, please call (269) 445-4438 to register by Friday, Oct. 31.
