NILES – According to Amtrak official Jamie Turtle, repair work on the Amtrak grade crossing at Lincoln and Platt which was originally scheduled to begin on Oct. 8 is now scheduled to begin Saturday morning, Nov. 1.
The crossing is not expected to reopen until Tuesday morning, Nov. 4.
An issue which was discovered with the super elevated track in that vicinity has forced Amtrak to lower the train speeds from 72 MPH to 45 MPH. An adjustment to the track elevation is necessary, prompting the closing.
Motorists should find alternate routes to get around the crossing area until the emergency repair work can be completed, according to Neil C. Coulston, Public Works director, City of Niles.
