Amelia Harrison takes second at tennis tourney

DOWAGIAC – Lisa Rubino won her fourth straight women's doubles championship on Saturday at Dowagiac Middle School as the Dowagiac City Tennis Tournament continued.
Rubino, who had won the previous three tournaments with Ann O'Keefe, captured Saturday's title with Taylor Townsend.
Rubino and Townsend went 3-0 in round robin play.
Rubino and Townsend defeated Sue Watson and Tonya Scherer 7-6, 6-2 and then toppled Michelle Urbranski and Amelia Harrison 6-7, 6-1 and 10-2.
In their final match, Rubino and Townsend defeated Ami Sarao and Elizabeth Kolden 7-6, 5-7 and 10-8. They had to rally from a 5-1 deficit in the super tiebreaker.
Urbanski and Harrison finished second after defeating Sarao and Kolden 6-4 and 6-4, as well as Watson and Scherer 6-1 and 6-1.
Sarao and Kolden defeated Watson and Scherer 7-5 and 6-4.
Men's Doubles
Jim Darr and Larry Watson rallied from a set down in the men's final to defeat Mike and Chuck Rubino 2-6, 6-3 and 6-2.
In reaching the finals, Darr and Watson defeated Adam and John Hess 6-3 and 6-1 in the opening round and then defending champions Terry Proctor and Dave Negron 4-6, 6-2 and 10-7.
The Rubinos opened up with a 6-3 and 6-1 win over Bo Parsons and Brandon Knapp and then a 7-6 and 6-3 win over Adam Carlson and Mike Urbanski.
In other first round matches, DeAngelo Baylock and Sonny Swartz were defeated by Carlson and Urbanski 6-2 and 6-4, while Proctor and Negron defeated Greg and Chris Harrison 6-1 and 6-1.
In the consolation round, Baylock and Swartz defeated Parsons and Knapp 6-3, 2-6 and 10-6, while team Hess defeated team Harrison 7-5 and 6-3.
In the consolation finals, team Hess defeated Baylock and Swartz 7-6, 2-6 and 10-5.
Mixed Doubles
Mike and Lisa Rubino won their fifth mixed doubles championship on Sunday at Dowagiac Middle School as the Dowagiac City Tennis Tournament wrapped up.
Team Rubino defeated Larry Watson and Ami Sarao in the finals 6-1 and 6-2.
In the opening round, team Rubino won by default over Sarah and Terry Proctor.
In the semifinals, team Rubino defeated Amelia and Greg Harrison 6-2 and 6-2.
Watson and Sarao opened the tournament with a 6-1 and 6-1 win over Elizabeth Kolden and Kevin Proshwitz.
In the semifinals, Watson and Sarao defeated Sue Watson and Jim Darr 6-2 and 6-2.
In other first round matches, team Harrison defeated Michelle and Mike Urbanski 6-1 and 6-1, while Sue Watson and Dar defeated Jessica Robinson and Bo Parsons 6-3 and 6-1.
Team Urbanski finished third after defeating Parsons and Robinson 7-5 and 6-4.
Robinson and Parsons reached the finals with a 2-6, 6-4 and 10-7 over Kolden and Proshwitz. Team Urbanski advanced to the finals with a bye.
Men's Singles
For the 15th time, Larry Watson was crowned the king of Dowagiac city tennis.
Watson, who last won a title in 2005, defeated Adam Carlson in straight sets on Sunday, July 27 at the Dowagiac Middle School courts.
Watson won 6-3 and 6-2 to pick up his 15th singles championship.
In reaching the finals, Watson received a first round bye and then defeated Aaron Wilson 6-4 and 6-4 in the second round.
In the semifinals, Watson defeated 2006 champion Jim Darr 6-1 and 7-5.
Carlson advanced to the finals with a first round bye and a 6-7, 6-0 and 10-5 win over Terry Proctor in the second round.
In the semifinals, Carlson defeated defending champion Doug Boyll 6-3 and 6-3.
Adam Hess finished third in the tournament with a 6-7, 6-1 and 10-8 victory over DeAngelo Baylock.
In opening round matches, Hess defeated Amarpol Sarao 6-3 and 6-2, while Wilson topped Kevin Proshwitz 6-3 and 6-0.
In the second round, Boyll defeated Hess 6-3, 7-6 and Darr defeated Baylock 6-3 and 6-3.
Women's Singles
Lisa Rubino won her fifth singles championship as she defeated Amelia Harrison 6-1 and 6-1 on Sunday.
Rubino reached the finals with a first round bye and then a 6-1 and 6-1 win over Ami Sarao.
Harrison advanced to the finals with a first round bye and a 6-2 and 7-6 win over Sue Watson.
Sarao finished third with a 7-6 and 6-2 win over Watson.
