CASSOPOLIS – The demolition of two eyesores on Reed Street was sweet for two reasons. The level ground following the houses removal is much more pleasing to those driving in from the south on M-62 through Cassopolis and also for the honey found in one house.
The huge amount of honey bees in the walls of the house at 124 Reed St. delayed the demolition last week, but Village President Clare Mallo said the honey was clear and delicious, which dripped from a piece of comb he was given.
Visitors to Monday evening's village board meeting praised the board for completing the process it took to have the buildings condemned, purchased by the village and removed.
The process has been started for the third and last house on that side of the street, closest to Stone Lake, according to Village Manager Kevin Gillette.
The houses could not be salvaged, Gillette said, they "snapped like styrofoam."
At the Jefferson Township candidate's meeting the village received a round of applause, added Scott Teter.
Teter and Stacey Rentfrow, candidates for Fourth District judge, both introduced themselves to the board. The third candidate, Dale Blunier attended last month's meeting.
Also attending Monday's village board meeting were Sandy Hoger and Leslie Paul from the Cass County Council on Aging, asking the board and community for its support of the coming millage for the COA.
