NILES -A free safety inspection to help older drivers drive safer and longer is coming to the Niles Senior Center, 1109 Bell Road on Tuesday, from 1-4 p.m.
Developed by the American Society on Aging (ASA) in collaboration with AAA, AARP, and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), CarFit(r) is an educational program designed to help mature drivers find out how well they "fit" with their vehicles, and what actions might be taken to improve this fit. A proper fit in one's car can greatly increase not only the driver's safety but also the safety of others.
CarFit(r) includes a 12-point check list to ensure that senior drivers are sitting properly in their vehicle and that the driver's seat, seat belt, mirrors, steering wheel, head restraint, gas/brake pedals and other controls are positioned properly. Each CarFit(r) evaluation is administered by specially trained volunteers and health professionals such as occupational therapists and driver rehabilitation specialists.
