EAST LANSING – David Grewe, who compiled a 75-85 record in three seasons as head baseball coach at Michigan State, has resigned from his position to become the associate head coach at LSU, where he will be reunited with Tiger head coach Paul Manieri.
Grewe previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach under Manieri at Notre Dame (2003-05).
Assistant coach Tony Baldwin will serve as interim head coach as Michigan State begins a search for a successor.
"I am grateful for Coach Grewe's leadership and tireless energy over the last three years," said MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis. "He provided a foundation on which we will continue to build. The program is in excellent shape and with the stadium project underway, the best is yet to come for Spartan Baseball."
In 2009, the Michigan State baseball program will play in a new 2,500-seat baseball stadium at Old College Field. Spartan baseball also has assembled the Big Ten's top recruiting class for the upcoming 2009 season, according to Baseball America.
During his tenure, Grewe produced a 42-53 worksheet in Big Ten play, and each of his three teams were in contention for a spot in the conference's postseason tournament on the final day of the regular season. He regularly put together one of the league's most difficult schedules. In 2008, MSU recorded a victory against College World Series participant Rice, as well as wins over regional powers Stetson and Western Carolina. In 2007, the Spartans defeated South Florida, Oklahoma and won three of four at Ohio State.
During his three seasons, seven Spartan players were selected in the MLB Draft. Three players were taken in the 2008 draft, topping each of the previous two years when two players were selected.
Under Grewe's direction, the Spartans also enjoyed notable achievements in the classroom. Thirty baseball players earned Academic All-Big Ten honors over the past three seasons, including 12 student-athletes in 2006.
