ST. JOSEPH – Colorectal cancer, cancer of the colon or rectum, is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Fortunately, when diagnosed in its early stages, colorectal cancer is one of the most curable forms of cancer.
One way to facilitate early detection is the use of home screening kits. During June 24 through June 26, Lakeland HealthCare will be providing a free Hemosure(r) One-step iFOB test at several locations. This new test eliminates the need for participants to observe a restricted diet or limit the use of medications prior to screening.
Although common in both men and women, men are more likely to get colorectal cancer, and the risk for all adults tends to increase after the age of 50. A recent Center for Disease Control study found that approximately 41.8 million average risk adults age 50 or older have not yet been screened for colorectal cancer according to national guidelines. In 2008, it is estimated that there will be approximately 108,070 new cases of colon cancer, 40,740 new cases of rectal cancer, and a combined 49,960 Americans will die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society.
The screening is easy to administer at home. It detects hidden blood in the stool, a first step in the screening process for colon cancer. The results will be mailed to the participant's home.
Free screening kits are available on June 24, 25, and 26, at the following locations and times:
