MOUNT PLEASANT – Berrien County resident Marty Dynes was honored as the Special Olympics Michigan Inspirational Athlete of the Year from more than 16,000 athletes at State Summer Games in Mount Pleasant Friday, May 30.
More than 4,000 athletes, coaches and volunteers watched as the surprised athlete accepted the award during Closing Ceremonies in the Student Activity Center on Central Michigan University's campus.
The award demonstrates sportsmanship, appreciation and encouragement to fellow athletes, a positive attitude toward SOMI training and competition and the nominee's strong desire to do his or her best.
"Marty is the kind of athlete you want on your team," said Barb Brown, Area 17 Director. "He trains, is well-prepared no matter the sport and at competitions he works to his fullest."
Dyne's commitment to helping others is not only encouraged during SOMI events, but at home.
He comes from a family of many adopted special needs individuals of varying levels and is always helping his family to reach to their highest potentials.
He was selected as a swimmer for the National Games in Iowa where he competed in aquatics including 50 meter freestyle, 100 meter freestyle and 4×50 relay. Additionally, Dyne competes in basketball and athletics.
"Marty wants everyone to do their best and will help them train to their potentials," said Brown.
