LANSING – House Democrats failed to take up legislation this week that would ban the practice of partial birth abortion in Michigan.
"The lack of action on this legislation is very disappointing," said Dowagiac's Rep. Neal Nitz, R-Baroda.
"This procedure is, in the words of a Berrien County doctor, infanticide and it needs to be banned in Michigan."
The Senate sent Senate Bill 776, the partial birth abortion ban, to the House on Jan. 22 of this year.
Since there are 67 Right-to-Life endorsed members in the House, a vote was expected on the legislation no later than Wednesday, May 21.
Yet the ban was not given any consideration, and an amendment was blocked as House Democrats failed to allow a vote during Thursday's session.
"This bill has been introduced every term I have been in the Legislature," Nitz said.
"It is time we make it a law."
