Bernice F. Grinnell, 91, of Wells Street, Niles, died at 10:05 a.m. Friday, May 23, 2008, at Lakeland Community Hospital, Niles, following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, with Dr. Daniel Stenberg of Buchanan, officiating.
Burial will be in Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, Niles.
Friends may call beginning at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
She was born on Nov. 26, 1916, in Chicago, Ill. to Nicholas Barzen and Catherine Wiedeman and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Chicago.
She lived in Niles since 1943, coming from Chicago.
She retired in 1982, after 10 years of service for Niles Precision Company in Niles.
She was a former member at Emmanuel Baptist Bible Church and Fulkerson Park Baptist Church, both in Niles.
She volunteered at Fernwood Botanic Gardens.
On Aug. 29, 1936, in Chicago, Ill., she married Vernon E. Grinnell, Sr., who died Feb. 8, 1984.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine Gruenes, who died Deb. 20, 2000. and Shirley Kovarik, who died in 1993.
Surviving family includes two sons, Vernon E. (Pat) Grinnell, Jr. of Calhoun, Ga. and John A. (Mary Carol) Grinnell of Niles; grandchildren, Sandy (Jeff) Bowers of Piedmont, S. C., Scott (Amber) Grinnell of Crestview, Fla., Susan (Tom Pizzarello) Grinnell of Lexington, S.C., Shara (Larry) Hamilton of Calhoun, Ga., Abby (Al) Wier of Elkhart, Ind. and Todd Grinnell of Buchanan and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
