Elkhart driver rescued from burning vehicle

CASSOPOLIS – Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports his office investigated a single motor vehicle, personal-injury accident on U.S. 12 near Kessington Road in Mason Township.
The incident was on Wednesday, May 14.
Jeremiah R. Egbert, 28, of Elkhart, Ind., was traveling east at a high rate of speed when Egbert lost control and ran of the roadway to the north.
Egbert's vehicle then struck a tree and the vehicle caught fire.
Egbert was pulled from the burning vehicle and to safety by citizens Kris Watson of Union, Thomas Friend of Cassopolis, Robert Tengolisch of Bristol, Ind., and Jon McKibbin of Edwardsburg.
Egbert was transported to Elkhart General Hospital by Porter ambulance for his injuries.
Safety belts were used and it appears that alcohol may have been a factor in the accident. This incident remains under investigation.
Deputies were assisted by Porter fire and ambulance.
