Many Thanks to: Art Angel Susan Lingar (photo attached of Susan with Zygmund Jankowski's self-portrait) for taking the time, the funds, and all the effort to give us the loan of this wonderful artwork; Art Angels Joanne and Bob Wright for many beautiful art books! Art Angels AARP, who provided us temporarily with another office person, so we can now be open more hours (see last paragraph for new hours)!
Continuing in the Shirley and Donald Roti Roti Gallery: Zygmund Jankowski: A Collection, through May 31. Zygmund Jankowski, a South Bend native, now resides in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He received his formal training at the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California, where he graduated in 1948. In addition, he studied at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University and St. Anselm's College in New Hampshire. He has exhibited widely and won many prizes and purchase awards.
Continuing in the Show Place Gallery: Southwestern Michigan College Student Artists through MAY 17; exhibit featuring works in clay by seven students: Minza Zdzieblowski, Jason Wesaw, Linda Shelly, Michelle Stambaugh, Carrie Safin, Dean Hill, and Toby Clark; and also art from their teacher, Sherrie Styx.
Through May 31 in the Library Gallery: Portraits, Drawings and Lithographs by Jeff Paulette. Known as the Buchanan elementary art teacher for 29 years, Jeff Paulette retires from this position at the end of this school year. He began his teaching career at Jimtown, Indiana, and seven years later moved to Buchanan. We are pleased to show his artwork during the month of May. He will be honored at a reception on SUN, MAY 25, from 2-4pm, at which time all of his third grade students will exhibit a variety of their art in the Show Place Gallery. The third grade student show will run from MAY 25-30.
Coming to the Show Place Gallery May 19-23, Buchanan High School Student Art Exhibit, with reception on WED, MAY 21.
Mark Your Calendars: June 28, 5pm. Wine, Windows &Gardens auction. Exhibit in JUNE. You will have three weeks to come in and view the exciting garden art created and donated by area artists for this special event, then return on June 28 for our annual auction fundraiser, to bid on your choices! All items for this auction are donated by generous area artists.
Wish List: (1) Kiln shelves and stilts, any size; (2) Electric potter’s wheels; (3) Electric enameling kiln; (4) Bench grinder; (5) Five gallon buckets with lids or one gallon size, plastic ice cream buckets with lids, or similar containers; (6) More Volunteers n even three or four hours a month would be very helpful! Call the Center at 269-697-4005 and ask for Nancy Fehlner, our Volunteer Coordinator, for more information, or stop in and pick up a volunteer form.
Memorial Bricks or bricks in honor of someone are available on an ongoing basis. They are placed in a permanent sidewalk in front of the Center. Call or stop in for more information.
Class Listings
Working From The Model. Adults and Teens. Facilitators: Shirley Roti Roti and Tom Fehlner Wednesdays May 21,28. 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. $30 for 8 evenings. Nonmember: $35 for 8 evenings; or Walk-ins: $5 for each evening (pay as you go). Bring all of your own materials, drawing board and easel if portable. Clothed models of all ages, both male and female, will be provided for quick studies and prolonged poses in any medium. Open to anyone who is serious about improving their observation and drawing skills. Spend a casual, relaxing evening working with others who share your interest in art in a friendly, unstructured, non-judgmental atmosphere. Participants are encouraged to help plan each session. The only way to learn to draw is to draw, draw, draw.
Wine, Windows And Gardens Workshops. Sealing Coat &Drop off Day, FRI, May 23, 11a.m. – 8 p.m. Cost: None. If you would like to paint a chair, window or garden tool to donate for our annual fund raising show and auction, and you need a place and materials to get started, come pick out your chair or window, or bring your own garden tool, and apply the provided prime coat. Then return home and use any materials to creatively decorate and paint your chair, window and/or garden tool. Come back and apply the provided final seal coat in May. Finished items can be left to dry or dropped off in plenty of time before due date of May 23. We have some glass paints available from last year. Our theme for this year is Windows, Wine and Gardens. Windows and chairs may be picked up any time we are open if you are going to do all the work at home.
Open Clay Studio Open only to students currently enrolled in a clay class. Studio Master: Daniel Florey. 6 Sundays April 13, 20, 27, May 4, 11, 18; 1 – 4 p.m. No extra cost except if you need to buy more clay The studio will be open and supervised so that students can put in extra time. You can work along side Dan who will demo and answer many of your questions.
Introduction To Glass Bead Making. Adults &Teens (limit 10 students). Instructor: Sherrie Styx. Wednesday May 14. 12 – 2 p.m. $26 / $30. All materials provided. Introduction to Glass Bead Making using a portable torch. In this class, students will get basic instructions on how to make glass beads using stained glass and using glass Effetri rods. Please wear cotton clothing, bring tinted UV sunglasses and NO sandals.
How To Look At Ceramics. Adults &Teens. Instructor: Brooks Bouwkamp. Tuesday, May 27, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. $10 / $12. This is the second in a BAC series of lectures on how to recognize different art media and processes to be presented by experienced artists and teachers. Have you ever wondered what the difference is between earthenware and stoneware, or terra cotta and porcelain? Or the different firing techniques such as electric, wood, gas, soda salt, Raku or pit firing? Oxidation vs. reduction?
New Hours: 9am-6pm Monday through Friday, EXCEPT Thursday until 7pm; and 1pm-4pm on Saturday. Closed on Sunday. Stop in today for a visit and/or sign up to volunteer at 117 West Front Street in Buchanan (10 minutes from Niles, 25 minutes from South Bend, 30 minutes from New Buffalo and 35 minutes from St. Joe/Benton Harbor).
