Douglas E. Stewart, 52, of Five Points Road, Edwardsburg, died at Elkhart General Hospital, Elkhart, Ind. at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2008.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 28, at 1 p.m. at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home, Elkhart, Ind., with pastor Alan Griffen of the First Presbyterian Church in Goshen.
Burial will be in Adamsville Cemetery.
He was born on Sept. 30, 1955, in Elkhart, Ind. to Melvin M. and Shirley (Prugh) Stewart.
He was president of Best Plastics, retiring in 2000. After his retirement, he and his son, Patrick, stated restoring Chrysler muscle cars. In the past year he had been building tools for his brother, Jim's business.
He graduated from Edwardsburg High School in 1973.
He was a NHRA drag racer for 35 years. He set numerous class records during his racing career, as well as winning national and divisional races.
He enjoyed cooking his infamous hot wings and shooting off fireworks for his family and friends. He was also an avid snowmobiler.
Surviving family includes three sons, Matthew Stewart of Buchanan, Patrick Stewart of Edwardsburg and Kenneth Stewart of Edwardsburg; a daughter, Tiffany Stewart of Edwardsburg; three grandchildren; his parents, Melvin and Shirley Stewart of Edwardsburg; a sister, Sandy A. (Bob) Baucus of Edwardsburg and a brother, Jim V. (Jane) Stewart of Edwardsburg.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
