MENDON-Carol Higgins, 53, of Mendon, will formally announce her candidacy for the 59th District seat of the Michigan House of Representatives at a May Day celebration at Meyer Broadway Park, Three Rivers. The public is invited to enjoy local musicians, locally grown snacks and a tree seedling giveaway from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 1.
Among Higgins' interests are strengthening small communities, protecting farmland and natural resources and developing local sources of energy.
"Our state is still a great place to live – in spite of the challenges we have before us," says Higgins. "And all of the economic issues we're dealing with are compounded by energy costs. As a rural district, we can't do much of anything without getting in our cars. It's painful to fill the tank.
"We need incentives to help us make smarter energy choices and keep transportation affordable. This area has a great potential for harnessing renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. And developing these technologies will cultivate new jobs in the state."
A retired public school teacher, Higgins taught in Marcellus for 17 years and was Cass County's Conservation Teacher of the Year in 1999 and has coached middle school volleyball, track and cheerleading.
