NILES – The stop light on U.S. 31, located at the Wal-Mart and Lowe's intersection, desperately needs a turning signal light, according to Niles Township residents and board members.
"Too many accidents are happening there. It's a dangerous intersection," Marge Durm-Haitt, township clerk said.
Council member Dick Noble has been trying since 2005 to get Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to put a left turning signal put in at the light, but attempts have been unsuccessful thus far.
"Every time there is an accident, he reports it, whether it's minor or major. Unfortunately, one Wal-Mart employee lost their life at the light and others have been seriously injured. Something has to change," Haitt said.
According to the Berrien County Sheriff Department's monthly log for March, three accidents occurred at the intersection, something not uncommon to see on a month to month basis.
The good news is that board members feel it may finally happen in the near future, due in part to Noble's efforts.
"That's what we are hoping," Haitt said.
In other news, the board approved independent contractor inspectors for mechanical and electrical inspections.
Also, the township is turning to the county for help in turning Walnut Street into a paved road. Right now, the road is dirt and is in very bad shape, according to Haitt.
"We're hoping the county will work with us because we don't have the equipment to pave that road," Haitt said.
Construction on the road should begin by this summer.
Also, The Berrien County Sheriff's Department awarded a Certificate of Appreciation to Wal-Mart for their continued support to the police department.
Board members also approved election inspectors for the May 6 school elections.
