NILES – Vanya Ruppart has broken the 50-yard backstroke record for the 8 and under division with a time of 40.82.
Ruppart broke the 1999 record set for Lindsay Craig of 40.89.
Ruppart also qualified for the 10 and under 50-yard backstroke in the age group state meet to be held Feb. 23.
She is the youngest YMCA Mariner to qualify for the meet this season. Ruppart will also be swimming in the 8 and under state meet in Waterford today.
Twelve additional Mariners will join her for the competition.
Ruppart is the daughter of David and Wendy Ruppart. She is a second grade student at Ballard Elementary School.
