CASSOPOLIS – On Tuesday, July 31, at approximately 12 p.m., detectives from the Cass County Drug Enforcement Team were called to the 19000 block of Metcalf Court in Mason Township, Edwardsburg.
Citizens in the area reported discovering a cooler in which chemical smells were emanating. CCDET certified meth lab responders investigated the materials and determined that the cooler contained anhydrous ammonia and components of a meth lab that had been used previous to the discovery.
These items were made safe and transported to the Berrien County Forensics Lab for analysis.
The cooler was found next to the roadway by a 3-year-old child who was playing with her grandfather.
The child's grandfather (who lives near where the cooler was found) then opened the cooler and was immediately overcome by a chemical smell.
Neither the grandfather or the child were injured.
Both refused medical treatment at the time investigators arrived at the scene.
No suspects were located.
The incident remains under investigation, however.
