Two die Saturday

BERRIEN SPRINGS – Two people were killed in an accident at Shawnee and Burgoyne roads Saturday, at approximately 7:15 p.m. One was pronounced dead at the scene, the other at the hospital. The two deceased were from Niles and Berrien Center.
According to the Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township Police, it appears one vehicle was traveling southbound on Burgoyne at a high rate of speed when it went through the stop sign. It appears to have collided with the second vehicle traveling eastbound on Shawnee Road, causing both vehicles to leave the roadway, landing in a nearby field, heavily damaged.
Medics were on the scene four minutes following dispatch and attended to the injured parties. There were three occupants in each vehicle.
Two of the occupants of the vehicle traveling on Burgoyne were taken to the emergency room in Niles. They were treated and released. The third occupant refused medical attention.
Those who died were occupants of the vehicle traveling on Shawnee. The third occupant of that vehicle was taken to Lakeland Hospital in Saint Joseph and is in stable condition.
Names of the deceased were not released at press time. Occupants of the vehicle traveling on Burgoyne were from Berrien Springs and Illinois. One injured occupant is from Berrien Center. Baroda-Lake Township Police Department, the Berrien County Sheriff's Department, the Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township Fire Department and Medic One all assisted at the scene.
