NILES – Hudsonville Unity Christian finished just one point higher than Buchanan to claim the tournament title at Saturday's Lowell Tennis Invitational.
Unity Christian finished with 18 points, while the Bucks ended with 17. Lowell finished with 13 points, while Alma finished with none.
"Unity Christian (Division 3) and Lowell (Division 2) gave us great competition. That is why we love to travel," Buchanan head coach Steve Bender said. "Last year, both of these schools thumped us, so I am pleased that we were right in the hunt this year."
Flight champions for the Bucks were True Sulier at No. 1 singles, who finished 2-1. Mario Bonardi finished 3-0 at No. 3 singles, while Brad Burns was 3-0 at No. 4 singles.
"We had some unbelievable matches with Christian, especially with the cold weather and so early in the season. All four doubles matches were a joy for the fans," Bender continued. "Very excited for Mario Bonardi. Due to his doubles partner taking the ACT test, we put him at No. 3 singles and he won the flight."
Andrew Scoggin and Josh Niven finished 3-0 at No. 4 doubles.
Flight runners-up were Dillon Bailey and Andrew Frederick at No. 2 doubles and Sean Thornton and Gabriel Meirelles at No. 3 doubles.
The Bucks are currently ranked No. 6 in Division 4.
