NILES – Even if it doesn't look like it outside right now, spring is here!
For many of us, that means it is time to get outside and get active, maybe work on that New Year's resolution to get in shape. There are many ways to get some exercise, but I am going to share some that I believe are about the best: walking, jogging and running.
The IDDFAR 5k run and walk is just over four weeks away, giving those who want to pursue one of the above activities a ready made goal.
Most people who haven't tried walking or running for exercise may think of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) as a long way to go with just four weeks to prepare. I know from experience that with the right attitude and perseverance, just about anyone could achieve this goal. I have put together a plan that most anyone, regardless of age, should be able to follow to prepare for a 5k in four weeks.
This plan would work for any 5k, but I have focused on the IDDFAR 5k because it is one of the earliest events around here, it is a low key non-competitive event, perfect for first timers, and it serves a good cause by supporting scholarships for local youth through the Issac and Dora Davis Family (IDDFAR). I also happen to be partial to the course, having laid it out myself along our beautiful riverfront trail.
If you follow the plan listed, here are some things to keep in mind:
As always, if you feel faint or dizzy- Stop! If it persists or you have other concerns don't push yourself until you have a doctor give you the ok.
If you have been looking for some motivation to get out and get some exercise, here it is! Sign up for the IDDFAR, or the 5k of your choice, and start on the plan- with a goal at the end of the plan you can't fail! Information on registering for the IDFAR 5k can be found at http://hometown.aol.com/barrydavis331/ or by calling Evelyn Fleming at 684-8126.
