EAST LANSING – The Kellogg Center at Michigan State University was the scene last Tuesday, March 27, for the Michigan State Daughters of the American Revolution (MSDAR) annual Awards Day.
Among those honored was Curt Johnson of Marcellus, Capt. Samuel Felt Chapter's candidate for the 2007 Conservation Award.
Chapter recommendations for the Conservation Award must be approved by the state, then submitted to the national society.
The national society makes the final decision on a nominee. The Certificate of Award and the brass medal are sent to the state, which makes the presentation.
State Conservation Chair Ellen Hicks in introducing Johnson quoted Chapter Chair Virginia Bontrager of Dowagiac's recommendation letter: "Johnson started as a boy, raising birds as a hobby, whether they were chickens, peacocks or pheasants. About 30 years ago Curt started growing more birds from scratch, with a 500-egg capacity incubator. Soon after, he established Rolling Hills Shooting Preserve. Curt calls Rolling Hills Shooting Preserve a 'preserve for the working guy.' "
"It's with a great deal of pleasure that we present this award to you, Mr. Johnson," Hicks said.
Attending the luncheon and ceremony from Capt. Samuel Felt Chapter were Regent Jane Wagel, Vice Regent Paula Johnson and Past Regents Margaret Hunter and Abigail Schten.
Johnson chairs the Cass County Conservation District.
