NILES – The American flag that's supposed to be flying above the cellular tower on Cherry Street should be doing so again soon.
"It's still in the hands of [U.S. Cellular]. They were able to get a flag up but there's a problem with the lowering device, the mechanism that actually raises and lowers the flag," said Neil Coulston, director of Niles Public Works Department. "They have the replacement part and are going to install it sometime in the near future."
Soon after, Coulston said U.S. Cellular would be holding a dedication of the new flagpole.
"And then people should start seeing the flag flying regularly," he added.
Coulston said the agreement between the city and U.S. Cellular states the cell company is to provide a certain number of flags each year.
"We were willing to accept the responsibility to raise and lower the flag as needed, but I'm not sure if they plan to do that themselves or still want us to do it," Coulston said.
